IIS106 Advanced Theory of Production Systems

This course deals with theory related to the various forms of production systems, which can be classified into three broad categories: 1) the traditional mass production system, as invented by Henry Ford; 2) the lean production system (or, the Toyota production system) of Japan ; and 3) the Uddevalla production system (or, the reflective production system ) of Sweden. Also real examples of production systems in various industries (automotive, ship building, semi-conductor) will be introduced.

It is the process of identifying all the costs associated with the investment, making informed choices about the options that will deliver the best value for the money, and managing those costs throughout the life of the project. Techniques such as value management help to improve value and reduce costs.

IIS524 Production System Design & Execution

Generally, industrial production lines are dynamic systems whose states change according to the occurrence of various events, thus exhibiting the characteristics of a discrete event system. If manufacturers are to remain competitive in a continuously changing marketplace, they must not only continue to improve their products, but also strive to improve production systems continuously. Thus, an efficient prototyping environment for production systems is crucial. A modern production line is a highly integrated system composed of automated workstations such as robots with tool-changing capabilities, a hardware handling system and storage system, and a computer control system that controls the operations of the entire system. The implementation of a production line requires much investment, and decisions at the design stage have to be made very carefully to ensure that a highly automated manufacturing system will successfully achieve the intended benefits. This course deals with various methodologies for the optimal design & verification of a production line.

IIS522 Advanced Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain is a network of suppliers - parts manufacturers - assembly plant - distribution centers - retailers - that works to deliver a product to the consumers. Many traditional management techniques mainly focus on the internal process of a company. But SCM (Supply Chain Management) focuses on saving cost and time at the intersection of the companies, by information sharing and collaboration based on partnership. This course will address important issues which interconnect basic processes of manufacturers, such as purchasing, sales, production, inventory, marketing, negotiation, costing, information technology, and performance evaluation; and strategies to implement an effective supply chain system. The concept of SCM can be applied not only to manufacturing but also to retail, construction, and service businesses as well.

IIS623 Theory of Constraints

Theory of Constraints provides a systematic approach to identifying constraints in the system, and improving them in a holistic approach. Such an approach has achieved dramatic improvement of business in production scheduling (DBR) and project management (CCPM). A new perspective on money (Throughput accounting) and decision making (Thinking Process) are also provided.

IIS624 Patent and Information Analysis

This course deals with a strategy of acquiring intellectual property rights in the perspective of research managers. The strategy is needed to turn the results of research and development of scientists and engineers into intellectual properties (patents, business secrets, copy-rights, etc) that protect their inventions and maximize benefits. The particular focus of this course is patents and students will be equipped with techniques and principles to measure, analyze and manage patent information, which are essential to develop intellectual property strategy.

IIS521 Technology Forecasting

This course introduces methods and tools of technological foresight and forecasting such as monitoring, scenarios, delphi techniques, trend analysis, and modeling. Literature reviews, seminar format, case-study preparation, presentations, and cooperative learning are defining characteristics of this course. The ultimate goal of this course is to link theory to practice by enabling students to apply forecasting methods and tools to a practical problem.

Product Assembly Systems

This course provides state-of-the-art knowledge and methodologies on how to design product assembly systems and how the assembly system is related to product assembly and assembly supply chains. The topics include assembly representation, assembly sequence, variation analysis for assembly, assembly robustness, assembly supply chain, assembly line design, balancing of mixed-model assembly lines, and product launch and system diagnosis. Students can learn fundamental principles of assembly modeling as well as practical methodologies that can be used in a manufacturing firm producing assembled goods. Students can also learn key managerial characteristics in product assemblies, assembly systems and supply chains.

Stochastic Models of Production Systems

This course introduces concepts, models and analysis techniques for the performance, efficiency and variability in flow systems: manufacturing, service and supply-chain systems. Topics to be covered include: flow system performance, problems caused by system variability, system variability modeling, effect of system variability, management of variability and application to lean systems. This course focuses on fostering students’ intuitive thinking capability and fundamental analytical skills to build stochastic models of production / service systems. This course also covers important mathematical properties and state-of-the-art applications in industry.

We will review accident causation theories, worker’s compensation, hazards in diverse occupations, related regulations, etc. Through the course, you could understand the importance of industrial safety and health issues, play a role as an industrial safety specialist, and conduct an incident investigation and safety analysis.

IIS532 Occupational Biomechanics

The course provides students with the multidisciplinary field of occupational biomechanics. It reviews basic knowledge of matrix and vector, and two-dimensional kinematics. It continues to three-dimensional kinematics with marker attachments. Students also acquire anthropometry to develop a human model to measure force and momentum for kinetics.

Advanced work analysis is the systematic study of work systems for finding the preferred method of doing work and for determining the standard time to perform a specific task. This course introduces students to method tools and work measurement techniques, such as process analysis, activity charts, person-machine charts, operation analysis, micromotion study, hand motions and film analysis, principles of motion economy, time study, rating factors, performance factors, work sampling, and predetermined time systems.

Data capture has become inexpensive and ubiquitous as a by-product of innovations such as the Internet, e-commerce, electronic banking, point-of-sale devices, bar-code readers, and  intelligent machines, and the amount has been increasing at an incredible rate due to technological advances. "Data mining" refers to a collection of techniques for extracting "interesting" relationships and knowledge hidden in a mountain of data in order to assist managers or analysts to make intelligent use of them. A number of successful applications have been reported in areas such as credit rating, fraud detection, database marketing, customer relationship management, and stock market investments. In this course, we will examine a variety of data mining techniques evolved from the disciplines of statistics and artificial intelligence (or machine learning), and practice them in recognizing patterns and making predictions from an applications perspective. Application (or case) surveys and hands-on experimentations with easy-to-use software will be provided.

IIS642 Advanced Linear Programming

These days it is necessary to resolve various decision - making problems that occur in the areas of production, distribution, transportation, construction, and telecommunications, where the economic situation has changed drastically. In this course, we deal with several modeling and solution methodologies that can be applied to various optimization problems encountered in the operation of industrial or information systems so that we can suggest a promising solution to the considered problem. Specifically, it is concerned with the modeling and analysis of complex decision problems that arise in the management of an organization.

This course deals with the modeling and simulation of various systems by using the DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specifications) formalism. The course is not intended to give an exhaustive treatment of either the theory of simulation or of systems. Sufficient coverage of both will be given to enable us to treat, in reasonable depth, the application of the former to the latter.

In addition, the discrete location problem, transportation problem and distribution problem are included.

IIS646 Nonlinear Optimization

In this course, we deal with Meta-heuristics methods which are necessary to understand various kinds of optimization problems and suggest a near-optimal solution with good quality in the areas of production and information systems. Specifically, most issues modeled by combinatorial optimization problems are known NP-hard, which is very difficult to find an optimal solution to. Therefore, it is very important to find a good quality of solution efficiently. This course introduces several meta-heuristic algorithms and literature results, while pursuing the improvement of the ability of applying them to real situations.

This course deals with the modeling and analysis of discrete event systems that can be useful for efficient design and analysis of production and service systems. Several basic methodologies and applications in discrete event systems theory are introduced, which include Finite Automata, Petri nets, Stochastic Timed Automata, Markov Chain, Queuing Theory, and Dynamic Programming. Through this course, students can develop basic skills and ability for efficient design and control of industrial and information systems.

IIS680 Machine Learning

Machine learning deals with the design and development of computer algorithms that can harness the vast amounts of data available nowadays, and then using this resultant data in an intelligent way to solve a variety of real-world problems. A principal focus of machine learning research is to automatically produce rules and patterns from data. In recent years, machine learning techniques have led to significant advances in many fields, including marketing, fraud detection, stock trading, robotics, machine translation, computer vision, medicine, bioinformatics, etc. And there is a very close connection between theory and practice in machine learning, and almost every application has a huge amount of accompanying theory. However, one of the cool things about machine learning is once you understand the basics of machine learning technology, it is a very open field and lots of progress can be made quickly by figuring out ways to formalize whatever we can figure out about the world. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the state-of-art algorithms used in machine learning and different perspectives, and hopefully to gain some understanding of what's going on next. We will discuss both the theoretical properties of these algorithms and their practical applications.

The Genetic Algorithm, Tabu Search and Simulate Annealing are included as additional topics. This course provides students with advanced manufacturing engineering concepts and how other manufacturing related contents are integrated together in a bigger scope. The main objective is focus on the holistic approach to analyzing and understanding the impacts and merits of the newest manufacturing technologies, which affect social, commercial, political, military, and demographic boundaries of the global society. Recent trends as well as the economical tradeoff, advantages and disadvantages of new technologies will be evaluated with the use of various sources of information.

IIS662 Advanced Engineering DB

This course provides the concept of engineering database design and increases the student's ability of building web-based database programming skills. To achieve these goals, we cover various database related transaction controls and fault-tolerant techniques. After finishing this lecture, students will understand the architecture of engineering databases, how to use SQL (Structured Query Language), and the various information management techniques which are needed to implement database systems and needed to build interoperability between information systems & web-based databases.

IIS663 Neural Networks

This course is designed for understanding basic principles, various models, and applications of neural networks. We study basic models of neural networks, and try to analyze them as to how they could be differently designed in order to solve a specific, given problem. Extension to knowledge acquisition is also discussed with introduction to CBR (case based reasoning). Also covered are learning paradigms in various applications, knowledge framework in modeling & simulation, and knowledge acquisition in terms of decision support systems.

IIS665 Digital Manufacturing System

This course provides a vision of how the techniques and tools of digital manufacturing systems (DMS) work together to support the operation of a manufacturing business. The concept of DMS emphasizes the integration of all elements involved in the product creation process, which comprises activities from design intent through manufacturing planning to actual manufacturing, including quality control, shipping, and customer feedback. In addition, the course will include the use of commercial software systems for various manufacturing applications.

IIS562 Robotic Systems

This course reflects the competitive trends in the evolution of robotics towards the increased flexibility and sensor-based automatic functions. Such functionalities are bolstered by the integration of information and communication technologies in the global production environment.

IIS565 Advanced Manufacturing Process Control

This course is designed for introducing the main concept, technologies, and implementation methods of computer controlled manufacturing systems. DCS (Distributed Controlled Systems) are discussed with the interface issues of automation devices, sensors, and PLC (programmable logic controller). PLC program design and practice are given, focusing on designing logical control of manufacturing processes. Also covered are the issues of manufacturing message communication such as field networks (CC-link, Device-Net, Profitbus-Net), Control Network, and information networks (Ethernet). Various models of manufacturing operating systems are studied in connection with the logical and physical control models of MES (Manufacturing Execution System).

IIS561 Computational Geometry

Computational geometry studies the design, analysis, and implementation of algorithms and data structures for geometric problems. These problems arise in a wide range of areas, including CAD/CAM, robotics, computer graphics, molecular biology, GIS, spatial databases, sensor networks, and machine learning. In addition to the tools developed in computer science, the study of geometric algorithms also requires ideas from various mathematical disciplines, e.g., combinatorics, topology, algebra, and differential geometry. This close interaction between various mathematical and practical areas has had a beneficial impact on both basic and applied research in computational geometry.

IIS566 Introduction to Expert Systems

Know the capabilities of current technology in knowledge-based expert systems, including intelligent agents and machine learning. Be able to recognize what problems are appropriate for expert systems, select an appropriate knowledge representation and reasoning method, and anticipate potential difficulties in developing and introducing expert systems. This requires familiarity with the basic approaches to knowledge representation and inference such as rules, frames and search, and machine learning techniques. It also requires understanding the political, technical and managerial issues involved in automating decision making.

Additionally, the introduction and applications of commercial telecommunications are included.

IIS572 Advanced Information System Design & Practice

We try to understand the evaluation and analysis of information system design & software engineering concepts, methodologies, techniques, as a high-level software engineering. In order to overcome its limitations or to discuss a newly emerging object-oriented software engineering (OOSE), we discuss systems engineering, a new concept of component-based software engineering (Component Based SE), and architecture-based software engineering (Architecture Based SE). Also discussed are UML, Component Based Design, and CMMI. Application cases are discussed in order to understand UML, SysML, and SDLC methodologies.

IIS573 Computer Graphics Application

This course provides an introduction to the area of computer graphics. Over the past 30 years, computer graphics has revolutionized movie and printing techniques, improved human-computer interfaces, and driven new applications such as computerized photography, art, games, simulations, and mechanical design. While graphics has become widespread, few people understand the internal workings of applications like video games, Adobe Photoshop, and the renderers behind Hollywood’s special effects and recent CG blockbusters. The goals of this course will be to: introduce OpenGL, a common graphics programming API; discuss a number of important, low-level implementational details hidden by APIs like OpenGL; and survey a number of subfields of graphics.
