Digital Media Seminar I, II

Digital media seminar course offers seminars from guest lecturers in various areas such as films, game, digital broadcast, the internet, interactive design, etc. The seminars discuss the issues and problems in areas of multimedia contents. The course also introduces current research projects and dissertations which are conducted by faculty members and other graduate students. The courses are composed of I and II. The first-year graduate students are advised to take the courses.

Game Producer

A producer is responsible for setting the project goal and managing resources to achieve the best possible results under given circumstances. Especially the roles of game producer may be more demanding since he or her has to deal with resources from many disciplines such as software, art, design, quality assurance, makerting and sales. Through this course, students are expected to face various practical issues and learn knowledge that are required to be a successful producer.

Advanced Game Design

The lectures deal with contents issues of character enhancement and life in online games. The mains points in the lectures are of initial game contents, character enhancement, combats, quests, items and trading, community building which are main contents of MMORPG

Analysis of Virtual World

The lecture focuses on issues of social virtual world contents including avatar customizations, interaction contents between players, micro-transaction. Furthermore, the lecture also covers of issues of as augmented reality or mirror world as well as mixed reality.

Topics in Game Production

Emerging issues in social games are discussed in the lecture. Issues of social games for smart phone platform and online community platform like facebook are mainly discussed. Each student selects a key paper which was published in game conference and presents it with additional materials to make it easy understanding. A final report must be submitted with a new idea for social games.

Serious Game I

The lecture surveys a history of serious game that deals military, medical, educational areas and each of case studies. Participant understand the overall knowledge of the serious game through the lecture.

Edutainment I

The lecture surveys a history of edutainment contests. With this knowledge, participant design and propose a new edutainment contents.

Edutainment II

The lecture surveys a history of edutainment contests. With this knowledge, participant design and propose a new edutainment contents for smart or tablet devices such as iPhone and iPad.

Game Therapy I

This class will study and research game addiction and internet addiction. The class materials will also cover related research areas such as education, psychology and psychiatry on the above topics.

Game Therapy II

This class will study and research the positive role of games as a therapy as well as the negative role of the game and the internet addiction.
The class research projects include serious game designs for therapeutic purpose and statistical analysis on the experimental results.

Digital Design Theories

This course is an introduction to different theoretical approaches to digital media design, using both historical and contemporary case study. Emphasis will be placed on examining the integration and development of media and design.

Design Research Seminar

This subject utilizes every media of design, analyzes methods of each delivery of significance and theories of image composition, and enables to learn reasonable planning and research abilities through materialization and evaluation of abstract images.

Color Theories

This course explores diverse issues of human vision, color theory and the controlled manipulation of computer colors to achieve desirable effects in the digital media production environment. With color exercises and creative assignments, students will have a professional understanding of how digital color happens, and how to exploit creative color design plan for media contents.

Interface Design

This course will explore the concept of interface and advanced issues and techniques of user-centered design. A general approach to interface design will be taught through the review of various interactive environments. Students will be challenged to achieve workable interface design methods, and will test on their projects with prototypes.

Information Visualization Studio

This subject promotes abilities to create structure of information by organizing patterns immanent in data and clarifying complexities so that people can easily find any knowledge necessary.

Media Design Studio

This course is structured to provide the logical approach and various techniques on projects utilizing digital media. This is a progress-oriented course that requires active student participation. Students will study on the theory and practice of effective methodology through concrete projects of their own interests in user experience design.

Interactive Media Design

The focus of this course is to implement the interactive idea to WWW using Flash. Student will discuss on the structure and aesthetics of interactive projects with attention to end-user needs. This course covers storyboarding, flowcharting, and action script.

User Experience Design Methodology

Class topics include conducting research and analysis, developing user personas, information architecture, interface design, and usability testing and analysis.

Designing User Experience for New Media

Focusing on the user experience, this course will implement the User Experience Design Methodology into a real/ virtual project.

Advanced Motion Graphics

This course will be a project based class for students. Students will be expected to handle several motion graphic projects from start to end. Motion Graphic in Social Network Service will be explored and short but effective motion graphic as a marketing tool will be explored.

Advanced Web Design

The goal of this course is to learn the real nature of digital communications using accessibility as design construct. In order to make web site designs available to everyone, everywhere, on all platforms, students will explore emerging technologies and multi-media solutions.

Code for Digital Media

The purpose of this course is for students to understand the theory of computer network and programming in a web-based environment. Students will study RIA(Rich Internet Application) such as Adobe Flex that is superior in practicality and scalability.

Physical interface Design

This course will explore physical interface. Looking away from the limitations of the mouse and keyboard we start to consider uses of the computer for more than just information retrieval and processing. The core technical concepts include digital, analog and serial input and output. Core interaction design concepts include user observation, affordances, and converting physical action into digital information.

Film Theory

This will give students opportunities to:

  • - read various articles on film language, technics, realism, film narratology, authorship, genre, and modernism and have a
    discussion about the articles.
  • - learn how to research, read and arrange the materials and write articles
  • - write some article on his/her own idea for the final report
Scenario Seminar

This will give students opportunities to:

  • - understand plot, characterization, theme, and screenplay format
  • - write his/her own screenplay and review the other's works
  • - read at least a book about screenplay
  • - read at least 10 feature film screenplay for analysis
Advanced Film Production

This will give students opportunities to:

  • - study to design and produce a movie or an animation
  • - practice on the whole process from pre-production via production to post-production
  • - make their own movie under the guidance of at least 3 professors on directing, VFX, and sound(design, recording, mixing,
    foley, and music)
  • ※ The student will not work with "film" but with digital equipment.
Production Design

Production design is the process of creating a new product such as film or tv show and animation. It is the efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process.
In this class, we are studying to the effects and operations such as film, TV show, animation.

Digital Visual Effect

This course offers you an opportunity to create visual effects for Film, Animation and TV commercials. Visual Effects include digital imaging, CGI composition, digital color grading, dynamic simulation and variable technologies in film-making.

3D Animation Workshop

3D animation workshop studies overall production on 3D animation.

Digital Images Analysis

Visual Effects in Film are analyzed both as a tool of the effects for narrative, and the technology for production needs in this course. Most comtemporary films use significant technology in its storytelling. For practical use of technology, these analyses will be a useful guide in film production.

Media Industry-Educational Project

This class is to collaborate with film, animation and game compony for a industrial-educational cooperative project.

Digital Creature Design

VFX in Film extends the narrative of film based on spectacular effects. Digital Creatures which act with actors in those new story trend have become main characters more often. In this class, students will analyze the personality of the character, narrative set-up, their artworks and modeling.

Advanced Sound Theory

In this course, learn acoustic theory and technology for producing sound.

  • - Practice for the production of the video sound.
  • - Sound research topic should read and discuss relevant papers.
3D Rendering Workshop

Students will create a digital creature with high polygon modeling in MAYA and Zbrush. Students will study materials, lighting techniques for rendering of a photo-realistic image and an artistic illustration in their portfolio for an animation studio.

Advanced Sound Analysis

In this course, understand the video sound.

Advanced Sound Production
  • - A sound theoretical knowledge acquired in the advanced sound theory based course is designed for advanced video
    sound production on the basis of sound technology and advanced video creativity.
  • - Appointedto the aesthetic or technical subjects involved in films produced by the project planning team during one
    semester, intensive work in the form of paper work review to write.
Theories in New Media

Students in Theories in New Media will explore key bookmarks and ideas in new media and communication technologies. Students are required to overlook and discuss the socialogical impacts of communication tetechnologies, which may cover the structural changes in creating, managing, distributing, and consuming materials and contents in (traidtional and new) media industries. Students are required to read a significant amount of readings and will write a full size research paper.

Research Methods

Research Methods course introduces students to the issues and ideas on conducting research in new media fields. Students are required to learn mehtods in choosing research ideas, gathering relevant research works, developing a specific research topic, and articulating proper research design including data preparation and data gathering. They will also learn and develop proper methods to analyze and interpret the data, and synthesize broader theories based on the findings. The course demands student a significant amount of readings, reviewing, and writings. Students are required to actively participate in class discussions.

Digital Broadcasting

The course is an introduction to and practices of planning and developing contents in digital television. Students will overview the processes of preparation, development, distribution, and consumption of digital teleivision production in relation to the emerging digital broadcast technologies such as IPTV, smart TV, and digital cable TV. Student should have knolwedge of programing lanague skill in Java or C++.

New Media Research I

The course explores emerging practices and trends in new media in various areas such as social networking services (SNS), MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer online role playing game) environment, blogs, and microblogs, etc.

New Media Research II

The course explores emerging practices and trends in new media in various areas such as social networking services (SNS), MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer online role playing game) environment, blogs, and microblogs, etc. It also provides opportunities to develop new products in a new media environment such as digital television (IPTV, and the internet television), smart phone, etc.

Media Staticstics I

This class will study and research media statistics.
The class materials will cover research areas such as statistical analysis and SPSS statistical tool.

Media Staticstics II

This class will study and research media statistics.
The class materials will cover research areas such as structural equation modeling and Amos statistical tool.

Advanced Media & Human I

This class will study and research how to integrate 'developmental, cognitive, and learning process' with digital media. Through this approach, students will learn how to apply 'media & human theories' to contents design as required in the real world.

Advanced Media & Human II

This class will cover the relationships among media, culture, and social human behavior. Students are expected to develop a new perspective on 'media & human theory' based on both 'constructivism' and 'structuralism'.

Media Prosumer I

This class will study and research media prosumer.
Prosumer is a portmanteau formed by contracting either the word professional or producer with the word consumer.
The class materials will cover research areas such as consumer behavior and its relationships with new media.

Media Prosumer II

This class will study and research media prosumer. The class projects will put emphasis on how bidirectional communications of new media affects the process of planning, production, marketing, advertisement, and sales in each phase. educational, medical areas through the lecture.

Media Therapy I

This class will study and research media therapy.
The class materials will also cover related research areas such as art, music, meditation therapies, etc.

Media Therapy II

This class will not only study media therapy, but also carry out experiments on synergy effects of media therapy compared to conventional methods.
The conventional therapies include art, music, meditation therapies, etc.

Advanced Computer Graphics

The goal of the course is to provide an introduction to recent advanced topics in computer graphics. This course covers specific advanced topics related to images and videos in computer graphics. Recent papers will be selected and discussed in the class.

Methods for Problem Solving

Various numerical techniques to solve problems arising in computer graphics and digital media applications will be covered in this course. They include methods for linear equation solving, root-finding, non-linear optimization, and differential equation solving. Additionally, GPU programming is also an important topic of this course, because it enables large scale real-world problems to be solved in a reasonable time.

Advanced Animation Theories

This class deals with basic concepts about computer animations, including mathematical background, and their applications for computer games and animation production.

Advanced Rendering Theories

In this course, we will study algorithms that create synthetic images fast enough that the view can interact with a virtual environment.
