주제: Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Ischemic Stroke Treatment

Stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability in the world and Korea, resulting in chronic motor and cognitive deficits such as hemiparesis, paralysis, and psychomotor and behavioral symptoms. Although thrombolysis (e.g. intravenous tissue plasminogen activator or intraarterial intervention, etc.) has been applied in the acute stroke, treatment for stroke is very limited so far. However, few effective therapeutic approaches have come up with to reduce brain damage and sequelae after ischemic stroke. Therefore, a paradigm shift is needed for the treatment of patients with ischemic stroke: from neuroprotection to neuroregeneration. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy is one of the potential regenerative therapeutic approaches. Although the therapeutic potential of MSC-based treatment has proven through some preclinical and clinical studies, there are still many limitations to be conquered. Herein, we show the results of our preclinical studies that preconditioning with autologous serum from stroke patients could enhance therapeutic potential of MSC, and MSC-derived extracellular vesicles could improve recovery after stroke.
